Stay Ahead of Surge Failures: Introducing the SPD Life Tester

In today’s digital age, protecting electrical and electronic devices from surges is crucial. Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) shield equipment from voltage spikes, but they have a limited lifespan and can lose effectiveness over time. This is where the SPD Life Tester is essential, helping ensure SPDs remain reliable and effective.

Why SPD Life Testers Matter
The primary importance of an SPD Life Tester lies in its ability to detect previously damaged or degraded surge protective device (SPD) modules. SPDs are designed to absorb and redirect excess voltage to prevent damage to electrical equipment. However, over time and with repeated exposure to surges, these devices can suffer from electrical and thermal stress that is not immediately visible.
Traditional visual inspections are insufficient for determining the health of these modules because internal damage may not be apparent to the naked eye. How SPD Life Testers Work
The SPD Life Tester measures the varistor voltage of an SPD, a key indicator of its ability to handle surges. Varistors are materials used in SPDs to absorb voltage spikes. As the SPD ages, its varistors can become less effective, and the device’s tolerance limit can be reached. The SPD Life Tester evaluates these parameters to determine whether the surge protector has reached its operational limits.

By conducting these assessments on-site, users can promptly identify SPDs that are no longer functioning correctly. If an SPD is found to be unserviceable, it can be replaced in a timely manner, ensuring continuous protection for electrical systems.
